Why Do You Need a Career Counsellor?

For most students—and even young professionals—career counselling is rarely the first choice when thinking about their future. Perhaps the term career counsellor itself creates an outdated image: an elderly person dispensing advice based on experiences that may have little relevance to today's rapidly changing world.

For Gen Z, the world is different. Their problems, aspirations, opportunities, lifestyles and expectations are shaped by technology, social media, globalisation and a constantly changing employment landscape. Change is the only constant, and no two individuals experience that change in exactly the same way.

That is precisely why a career counsellor matters.

A good career counsellor does not simply give advice. A counsellor listens. They try to understand the individual—their interests, abilities, challenges, aspirations, circumstances and socio-cultural environment—before suggesting possible pathways.

Career counselling is therefore not about saying, "You should become a doctor," or "You should choose Commerce." It is about helping an individual understand themselves, explore alternatives and make an informed decision.

No one's journey is the same.
No one's destination is the same.
Then how can the journey be the same?

At Tangent Coaching & Careers, we believe career counselling should be personalised, contemporary and exploratory. Through conversation, assessment and guidance, we help students and young professionals identify possibilities that may align with their unique abilities, aspirations and circumstances.

A career counsellor doesn't choose your destination.
A career counsellor helps you see the roads you could take.
